Most of the clothing today is made of synthetic, fossil fuel-based materials such as nylon or polyester. When washing these clothes, countless microplastic fibers are released and end up in the wastewater. Microplastic fibers are particularly difficult to filter out. They escape the filter systems of washing machines and wastewater treatment plants. Once in the rivers, lakes, and oceans the fibers accumulate toxins. Fish and other aquatic organisms cannot distinguish these microplastic particles from their actual food leading to infections or starvation. This is how synthetic fibers from our clothes end up on our plates and ultimately in the human body.

Using the GUPPYFRIEND Washing Bag is easy and effective:
  • Check the care label and sort synthetic clothes (e.g. nylon, polyester, spandex, rayon, elastane, material blends) from natural textiles (e.g. cotton, hemp, linen).
  • Put synthetic (and/or delicate) clothes into the GUPPYFRIEND Washing Bag.
  • Close the zipper and put it in the washing machine together with other, non-synthetic, textiles.
  • Wash your clothes as usual.
  • Take out wet clothes and remove the released microfibers from the corners of the bag and dispose of them in the residual household waste.
Tips:
  • Fill bag only 2/3 of the way to allow clothes to move inside bag.
  • The bag is designed to reduce fiber shedding at the source. The number of fibers collected after each wash varies.
  • Wash less often, shorter and colder (at 40° C/104° F/warm max).
  • Avoid fabric softeners and reduce spin spin/rotation speed.
