Homesick Host with the Most Candle

Although candles bring relaxation, memories, and comfort, their open flame can be hazardous when not monitored properly.

Before Burning:

• Prior to burning your candle, trim the wick at least ¼ inch to prevent uneven burning, dripping, or flaring. Learn more here.
• Avoid drafts, vents, or air currents to prevent rapid or uneven burning, sooting, and excessive dripping.
• Burn for 2–3 hours each time you light the candle to help it burn evenly. Trim wicks before each burn.

While Burning:

• Never leave a burning candle unattended or lit while sleeping. Extinguish all candles before leaving the room or going to bed.
• Never touch or move a burning candle, or a candle container when the wax is liquified.
• Don’t burn a candle all the way down. Stop when ¼ inch of wax remains in the vessel.
• If burning multiple candles, place each at least three inches apart to avoid melting or drafts.
• Extinguish a candle if the flame becomes too high or flickers repeatedly. Let the candle cool, trim the wick, and check for unwanted drafts before re-lighting.
• Use extra caution when burning candles during a power outage. Battery-powered lights are safer alternatives.
• Never burn a candle on or near anything flammable, such as furniture, drapes, bedding, carpets, books, paper, or decorations.
• Keep candles out of reach of children and pets, and do not place lit candles where they can be knocked over.

When Extinguishing:

• Use a candle snuffer to extinguish a candle, if available, to prevent hot wax from splattering.
• Do not use water to extinguish a candle, as it can cause hot wax to splatter and may break glass containers.
• Before leaving the room, ensure the candle is completely out and no glow remains in the wick ember.
• Do not touch or move the candle until it has completely cooled.
