What is DEET?

N, N-Diethyl-meta-toluamide, the chemical name for DEET, is the most common active ingredient in insect repellents. When applied to the skin or clothing, it provides protection against mosquitoes, ticks, fleas, chiggers, leeches, and other biting insects. When used correctly, it's relatively safe, however any chemical poses some risk and DEET may worsen existing conditions such as skin irritations.

Spray liberally on exposed skin or fitted clothing. Reapply every two hours or as often as needed. Always take care to avoid eyes when applying. It's always a good idea to patch test a small area of skin when using it for the first time or when using it in a new environment, as the product contains essential oils that may be irritating to sensitive or inflamed skin. Use adult supervision when applying to children. For your face, spray into your hands first, then pat to apply.
