The bamboo ‘Give it a Rest’ spoon is the ultimate answer to the question of where to put it. Are bamboo utensils sanitary?
Utensils made by the bambu brand have the built-in antibacterial properties of bamboo, which help prevent microbial growth. But they’re still wood, which absorbs liquids and oils from cooking and may harbor bacteria if not properly cleaned. Wash your Give it a Rest Spoon with mild dishwashing liquid and warm water after you use it.
How to care for your bamboo utensils
Rinse or wash your bamboo spoon right after you use it so food doesn’t stick — if it does, scrape it off with your fingernail or a dish scraper. Wash the utensil in warm water with mild dish soap, and pat it dry. Stand it up in the dish drainer to fully air dry it before you put it away.
- Don’t let your bamboo utensils soak in water (or sit in the soup) for an extended period.

Do bamboo utensils splinter?
If you care for your bamboo properly, it won’t splinter. Hot water, harsh chemical detergents, and long exposure to water are the most common causes of splitting in bamboo. If your bamboo utensil becomes “fuzzy” or rough over time, take to it with some fine-grit sandpaper.
