Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) is the most extensively studied essential oil for sleep. Systematic reviews and randomized trials report that inhaling or ingesting lavender oil reduces sleep disturbances and anxiety, particularly in clinical populations. A systematic review comparing oral vs. inhaled forms highlighted significant sleep-duration improvements using both administration routes in adults.[1] Clinical trials in ICU patients found that inhaled lavender essential oil lowered anxiety and enhanced sleep quality. [2]
Other essential oils like bergamot, tangerine, rose, and valerian also demonstrate sleep-enhancing effects. Inhalation of tangerine oil reduced sleep onset latency and positively altered brain wave patterns in healthy volunteers [3]. Bergamot oil inhalation improved mood and reduced stress in a mental health center study, indirectly supporting sleep readiness [4].
Meanwhile, rose and lavender blends were shown to improve lucid dreaming, dream recall, and sleep quality in female university students [5].
