1. Keep cleaning supplies readily available.

Store cleaning supplies where you’ll need to use them, like in the kitchen and bathrooms. If you’re pressed for space, gather all of your supplies into a cleaning caddy to make it easy to haul them from room to room.

2. Put on some rad tunes.

Make yourself a cleaning playlist, and add songs that get you all fired up. Shake your booty to Beyoncé while you fold the laundry, mop the floor to Megadeth, or blast K-Pop in the kitchen — whatever it takes to make those less-than-glamorous tasks feel like good times.

3. Throw things out as you go.

The less you own, the less you’ll have to clean (or think about cleaning so you can take a nap instead.) As you tend to your home, gradually pare down the clutter by asking yourself the Three Big Questions: Do I use it? Do I need it? Do I love it? Keep a donation box on hand, and when it’s full, take it to your favorite local charity.

4. If you have kids, get them involved.

The beauty of having children is that you can make them do some of the housework — ideally the things you don’t want to do. Assign your spawn age-appropriate daily or weekly chores to help keep the house in tip-top shape. You may need to bribe them, and that’s perfectly okay.

5. Make technology work for you.

Download a cleaning app to your phone that keeps track of your housekeeping checklist and sends you reminders — which is particularly helpful for duties that only come up once a month or quarterly. A robotic vacuum cleaner is a wonder of modern technology that’s life-changing for many, as well.

6. The final touch.

Once you’ve got your house in apple-pie order, make it smell like apple pie: Simmer a little water in a saucepan, and add orange slices, cinnamon sticks, cloves, and other spices. If an apple pie-smelling home isn’t for you, just add whatever you’ve got laying around — peppermint, lemon slices, lavender, rosemary, and basil will send a delicious aroma throughout your home.
