Found along the border of California and Oregon, Klamath National Forest offers a wide array of natural diversity and 200 miles of river systems. But high-severity wildfires in 2017 and 2020 have left charred land in their wake. The damage has affected not only critical wildlife habitat but also an important watershed area. Due to the intensity of the fires, seed sources are minimal to nonexistent. Efforts took place to replant affected land within the Happy Camp-Oak Knoll Ranger District of the National Forest. Trees including Douglas fir, ponderosa pine, sugar pine, incense cedar, white fir, brewer spruce, and Port Orford cedar have been planted in this area to restore the natural tree species composition. This reforestation work helped directly support the forest type that is critical to threatened and endangered wildlife species that rely on Klamath National Forest for survival. One such species is the northern spotted owl, found only in the Pacific Northwest and is currently facing declining numbers. The newly replanted forest will also support the health of the Seiad Creek watershed, ensuring cleaner waterways throughout the area.
