WRITTEN BY Grove Collaborative • 9 min read

These easy-to-use and travel-friendly tablets (sometimes called tabs) are usually packaged in an easy-to-recycle container. They’re also waterless and free of harsh chemicals — two big pros in our book.

Don’t get too worked up about it though, you can use our list below of the best toothpaste tablets and mouthwash tablets to find something that you love. FAQs

Do toothpaste tablets work?

Toothpaste tablets have pros and cons to using them. Although, there aren’t many dentists that would tell you to choose toothpaste tablets with fluoride over your regular toothpaste, they really do leave your mouth feeling clean and fresh after using them.

Here are some other major pros about these innovative gems for brushing your teeth:

  • They’re free of harmful chemical ingredients
  • They're perfect for those on the go, especially travelers or those who travel for work
  • They are better for the environment because using them instead of toothpaste keeps a plastic tube out of landfills
  • Toothpaste tablets with fluoride (and without) are water-free

To play devil’s advocate, here are some cons to think about before permanently switching to toothpaste tablets:

  • The toothpaste made from the tablets isn’t always evenly distributed in your mouth, which means some teeth could get less cleaning time
  • Usually fluoride toothpaste tablets are more expensive than regular toothpaste

How do you use toothpaste tablets?

Using toothpaste tablets isn’t rocket science. To use fluoride toothpaste tablets (and fluoride-free ones), all you need to do is pop that baby into your mouth — one tablet for each brushing. Once the toothpaste tablet is in your mouth, chew it up, and let it dissolve. Then, stick your toothbrush in your mouth and brush as you usually would with the “paste” that’s left behind.

One of our Grove writers tried toothpaste tablets for her first time and shared her experience with our community — read about her experience in our article, We tried it: What is it like to use toothpaste tablets?

Do mouthwash tablets actually kill bacteria?

Some do and some don’t — it depends on the ingredients used in the mouthwash tablets. Many mouthwashes and mouthwash tablets that claim to kill germs state so very clearly, but they usually include cetylpyridinium chloride. For example, these Georganics mouthwash tablets don’t claim to kill bacteria and, instead, they work to restore a healthy pH balance to your mouth. They also are flavored with organic peppermint oil to help battle bad breath.

Anyone who travels a lot or is away from home often, might want to give mouthwash tablets a try as they’re easy to take on the go because their packaging is small enough to throw in a bag. Plus, to use them, you usually just throw them in a glass of water to dissolve.
