About .04 ounces of sunscreen for your face is recommended, and enough to fill a shot glass to cover your entire body.. You really can’t go wrong, as long as you stick to any of the natural facial sunscreens that are free of harsh chemicals and fragrances you’ll find at Grove and on our list above.
But of course, these amounts are completely subjective – people with fairer skin will need more sunscreen than those with darker complexions. So at the end of the day, apply as much as you think is appropriate for your skin type and comfort level. And don’t forget to reapply every 2 hours if you’re hanging outside.

There are a few different reasons this may occur. You may have an allergy to an ingredient in the sunscreen, or an ingredient in the sunscreen may be mixing with another topical cream or lotion on your skin that is causing irritation. Common ingredient offenders include UV absorbers, fragrances, and preservatives. When in doubt, spot-test a bit on your wrist to make sure that no reactions occur. If all seems fine, then it’s likely safe to use.
If you have a particular skin condition that may be more prone to developing irritation, consult with your physician for medical advice tailored to your unique needs. Just know that investing the time and effort to find the product that works for you will pay off dividends in the future!

SPF 30 allows 3% of UVB rays to hit your skin, while SPF 50 only allows 2%. Given that your face is probably one of the most vulnerable areas on your body for skin cancer, at least an SPF 30 is recommended if you’ll be outside for long periods of time.
No matter which SPF number you use, make sure your sunscreen is broad spectrum. In nature, there are two types of Ultra Violet (UV) light rays coming from the sun that can cause potential damage to the skin. Where UVB rays cause more traditional and instantaneous symptoms and reactions –– like sunburn –– UVA rays are the baddies that cause wrinkles, premature aging, as well as sun and age spots.
Sunscreen products with a “broad spectrum” label on them are the best to use if you want to fully shield your skin from the broad spectrum of UV rays. Generally, broad spectrum sunscreen products should have at least one-third of the amount of SPF protection for UVA rays as it does for UVB rays.
