Is SPF 50 harmful? Can I use SPF 50 every day?

You can (and should) use sunscreen every day to protect your skin if you spend any time outside. Not only does sunscreen protect your skin from sizzling to a crisp, but it can also protect against sun damage like wrinkles, dark spots, and sun cancer, too.

Most dermatologists suggest using a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher, but you should always consult with your own doctor if you aren’t sure what to use for your skin type. SPF 50 is not harmful and can be used every day if your dermatologist recommends using an SPF that high.

Obviously, you should use sunscreen on sunny days, but did you know you should also be wearing it on days you don’t always see the sun? For example, on overcast days the sun can be hiding but still do serious damage to your skin as up to 80% of the sun’s rays are still being absorbed into your skin. Take the time to find the best sunblock to use every day for a healthier you.

Is SPF 50 good for face?

Yes, a sunscreen with SPF 50 is great for your face because it offers more protection than sunscreens with lower SPFs. No matter where you’re using the sunscreen — on your body or on your face — you want to look for sunscreen brands that have an option with SPF 30 or higher and that offer broad-range protection against UVA and UVB rays. SPF 30 sunscreens are known to block about 97% of the sun’s harmful rays, and the higher the SPF, the higher the blockage percentage will be.

While you’re out in the sun, you’ll want to make sure to reapply your sunscreen as needed to provide proper coverage, and you may also want to take breaks in the shade throughout your time outdoors. People with fair skin who burn easily may also want to cover up more or use sunhats and sunglasses, too. If you need help getting started on deciding which product to use, see our list of the best natural sunscreens and the best sunblocks above.

Can I skip moisturizer and use sunscreen?

You can technically do this if you’re ever in a bind — like when your lotion or moisturizer is nowhere to be found but you’ve got to head out the door in three minutes. But, unless a dermatologist tells you otherwise, we wouldn’t recommend using a sunscreen in place of lotion. Moisturizer is specifically made to help hydrate your skin and protect it from drying out, while sunscreen’s purpose is to protect you from harmful UV rays.

With that being said, you should use sunscreen after you use moisturizer to get the best of both worlds for your skin. Nowadays, there are also some products on the market that double as a moisturizer but also have SPF or are a sunscreen but also a moisturizer, too. You can browse our best sunscreen list above to see if there are any of these options that stand out to you.
