The 5 Best Spray Sunscreens.

WRITTEN BY Grove Collaborative • 9 min read

Don't get us wrong — we love sunscreen lotions. They're great for keeping your hands protected from the sun's rays while you're driving, and facial sunscreens are a must-have as the last step in your skincare routine. But lotions aren't always the most ideal option when you're on-the-go at the beach or trying to keep your kiddo still for long enough to lather 'em up. That's where sunscreen sprays come in.

Sunscreen sprays work just like lotions, except they come in easy-to-use spray bottles so you can spritz yourself or your kids and start having fun in the sun ASAP. We took a lookyloo at Grove member's top-rated sunscreen sprays and made a list of the best of the best for you to peruse at your leisure. Don't forget to check out the FAQ at the end where we shed some (sun)light on your commonly asked sunscreen queries.

FAQs

Which SPF should I use?

SPF, which stands for Sun Protection Factor, is the measure of how much UV exposure it takes for the sun's rays to burn skin that's been protected by sunscreen. A higher SPF number provides more sun protection than a lower SPF number — if it's applied correctly.

Generally, SPF 30 protects skin from burning 30x longer than skin without sunscreen. SPF 50 protects skin for 50x longer, and so on. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a minimum of SPF 30, but you don't need to bother going over SPF 50 — the EWG and the FDA agree that SPFs over 60 aren't that much more effective at protecting you from the sun than their lower counterparts. What matters most is that you reapply sunscreen every two hours, using about two tablespoons of sunscreen with every application.

What’s the difference between chemical and mineral sunscreen

You've probably seen the words "chemical" and "mineral" during your hunt for a new sunscreen. Chemical sunscreens use chemical sun blockers like avobenzone, oxybenzone, homosalate, and octocrylene that sink into your skin then convert the sun's rays into heat that's released from your skin. The ingredients in chemical sunscreens can cause allergic reactions in some people, and they've been shown to harm marine life and coral reefs.

Mineral sunscreens, aka physical sunscreens, use mineral-based ingredients like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide to physically block the sun's rays from your skin. These natural sunscreens are both reef-safe and effective. That being said, the best type of sunscreen for your skin is one that you're actually going to wear. Whether that's a chemical or physical sunscreen is up to you!
