Peppermint is an herb that's cultivated from Europe to Eurasia. It's well known for its powerful fragrance, potent vapors, and strong flavor. Peppermint is a hybrid of the watermint and spearmint plants, often found in the wild alongside one or both of its parent species.
The herb's key derivative – peppermint oil – is among the most versatile essential oils. It's a widely used ingredient in a slew of products, from peppermint cleaning spray to peppermint lozenges. It's even used heavily in natural insect repellents. Peppermint oil is often used to flavor foods, freshen the air, and to relieve uncomfortable physical conditions – such as stomach cramps.
Peppermint is not safe for dogs or any pet. Just the raw plant contains high concentrations of menthol, which has a very potent aroma. With distilled peppermint oil, the concentrations only increase. Peppermint vapors can do some real damage to your dog's sensitive sense of smell. It’s toxic to pets if ingested.
You may be tempted to use a peppermint flea and tick treatment. Though peppermint oil does repel many pests — such as fleas, ticks, and even mice — putting the stuff on your dog is dicey. Not only can the oil cause skin irritation, your puppy will want to lick it off. If the peppermint oil is concentrated enough, it could end very poorly for your poor puppy. Definitely not worth the risk!
