The 15 Best Natural Shampoos.

WRITTEN BY Grove Collaborative • 27 min read

So, you haven't hopped on the natural shampoo train yet? We're on a mission to change that. While there's no cut-and-dry definition for natural shampoo, it's generally accepted that these shampoos don't contain ingredients like sulfates and parabens. Instead, they use plant-based ingredients to cleanse your hair naturally. Natural shampoo nourishes your tresses and it comes in a ton of varieties like shampoo bars, powders, or classic liquids.

But natural shampoo sometimes gets a bad rap because it doesn't lather the same way products that contain sulfates do. Here's the thing: the natural shampoo industry has been boomin' lately, and there are plenty of great shampoos available that are easy to use and good for your hair, too. If you love natural bar soaps and you're hankering to try one of these shampoos, you've come to the right place. We rounded up Grove members' favorite natural shampoos so you can pick a yummy new 'poo for your 'do that really works.

This list of products was determined by ratings and reviews from Grove members.

FAQs

What is a shampoo bar?

If you haven't heard of shampoo bars yet, you're in for a real treat. Shampoo bars are a whole new way to get your hair soft and clean. Unlike liquid shampoo, which often comes in plastic bottles and uses a ton of water in the formula, products like Peach shampoo bars are 100% plastic-free, and they last just as long as an 8.5oz bottle of liquid shampoo.

"What about conditioner?" You might be asking. We wouldn't leave you hanging! We rounded up the best conditioner bars so you can achieve super-soft locks that look good and help out the planet, too. For an eco-friendly deep-dive, check out our shampoo and conditioner bar tutorial to get the most out of your bars.

How often should I wash my hair?

How often you wash your hair largely depends on your age, ethnicity, hair length, hair type, and activity level. Younger people tend to have more active oil glands, which leads to "greasier" hair — and thus more frequent washes. Curly-haired folks know that frequent washing is the enemy and opt for weekly or bi-weekly washing.

Exercise much? You might think you need to wash your hair every time you workout, but that's actually not true. A general rule of thumb for everyone is to wash your hair about three times a week. More than that, and you risk drying out your scalp. Of course, you know your hair best, and oftentimes it's possible to get away with fewer than three washes per week if you use dry shampoo to manage oil between washes.

When should I start washing my baby’s hair?

Babies have extra delicate skin, and bathing your baby too often or too soon could lead to dry, irritated skin — and that's the last thing you want! Always talk with your doctor if you have any concerns, but generally you can start washing your baby with unscented baby bath products when they're four to six weeks old.

Only use a drop or two of baby shampoo at first. Your little one won't need much — simply lather it enough to clean their hair then wash it out. And don't forget to follow up with a baby lotion that's formulated for your tot's skin! Need a few pointers? We've got helpful bathtime tips for newborns and all the way up to teenagers.
