Over time, detergent residue accumulates in the fibers of your towels. This soapy build-up prevents water and detergent from absorbing into the towels to clean them — and it also stops your towels from drying quickly. While your slightly moist towels finish drying, bacteria can start to form in the fabric, et voila — your towels never stop smelling like mildew, no matter how many times you wash them.
There are a few ways to fix this. Grab a laundry booster to give your detergent an lil' extra oomph while you clean your dirty towels. If that's not enough, adding vinegar to your washing machine during the wash cycle could help deodorize musty towels and bring them back to pre-residue freshness. And if vinegar isn't cutting it, it's time to give your towels a serious deep clean.
Fresh towels are one of the greatest pleasures in life, but sometimes, laundry detergent isn't enough to do the trick. If your towels come out of the dryer still smelling like wet dog or gym sweat, it might be time to give 'em a thorough deep cleaning.
That's where laundry stripping comes in. Laundry stripping is a cleaning technique that uses Borax, washing soda, and laundry detergent to penetrate fibers and pull out the scuzz, body oil, and dirt that are keeping your towels from smelling fresh. Here's how you do it: add 1/4 cup Borax, 1/4 washing soda, and 1/2 cup laundry detergent to a bathtub filled 1/4 way with hot water. Toss your stinky towels in and agitate them with a stirring stick until they're fully saturated. Let 'em soak until the water cools down, then wash them as usual. Check out our laundry stripping guide for a step-by-step tutorial!
Vinegar can clean, deodorize, whiten, brighten, and even soften your clothes and towels — without any added chemicals. These are all great reasons to add vinegar to your washing machine. If you've got mildewy towels, tossing 1/4 to 1/2 cup of distilled white vinegar to the final rinse cycle of your washing machine might be the ticket to stench-free towels.
Vinegar is good for more than just cleaning your clothes. We love using cleaning vinegar to wipe off windows, glass tabletops, and ceramic tiles because it's effective, eco-friendly, and nearly everyone has a bottle hiding in the back of their cupboard.
