FAQs

How does laundry stripping work?

If your smelly clothes, towels, or bedsheets refuse to de-funk after you've washed them, it's time to strip your laundry. Laundry stripping isn't a new technique, but it's experienced a surge in popularity lately thanks to videos going viral of the disgusting (and satisfying) laundry stripping process.

So — what is it? Laundry stripping is a deep-cleaning method that employs Borax, washing soda, your choice of laundry detergent, and hot water. All you do is fill a vessel — usually a bathtub — with hot water then add the borax, washing soda, detergent, and your icky fabrics. Let the fabrics stew in their lil' bath until the water cools, then wash 'em as usual in your washing machine. You'll be absolutely amazed at how much nasty gunk is left in the bathwater! For for info and detailed step-by-step instructions, check our laundry stripping guide.

Should I add vinegar to my washing machine?

Vinegar is one of those slept-on cleaners that deserves more acclaim than it gets. Here at Grove, we love adding vinegar to our washing machines because it helps whiten whites, brighten brights, reduce odors, and it works well as a fabric softener. Sounds pretty good, eh?

All you need to do to bask in the benefits of a vinegar wash is add a 1/4 to a 1/2 cup of distilled white vinegar to the final rinse cycle of your washing machine. If you're worried that your clothes will smell like a jar of pickles when they come out of the wash, don't be. The vinegar smell dissipates quickly in the dryer, leaving your clothes smelling super fresh and clean.

Is it better to wash clothes in cold water?

Cold water washes get a bad rep, but hear us out. Cold water washing reduces fabric piling, prevents wrinkles, and removes stains (grass, blood, and sweat, just to name a few). It's better for dark clothes, bright colors, and colors that tend to bleed. The best part is that washing your laundry with cold water is just as effective as washing your clothes with warm water! You don't need to do anything fancy for an effective cold water wash. Just make sure your washer is set at 60°F for cold water washes and get to washing. We've got a handy guide to cold water washes if you're interested in learning more.
