The best type of sunscreen to use is a broad spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher — but there's some confusion about what exactly SPF is, so allow us to shed some light on the subject.
SPF, or Sun Protection Factor, is the measurement of how much UVB exposure it takes for your skin to burn after you've applied sunscreen. SPF 15 provides you with 93% protection, SPF 30 with 97% protection, and SPF 50 provides 98% protection. That means SPF 15 allows about 7% of the sun's rays to hit your skin, SPF 30 allows 3%, and SPF 50 around 2%. It's worth mentioning that in order for sunscreen to be effective, it needs to be applied at least half an hour before sun exposure and reapplied every two hours you're in the sun.
UVA and UVB rays are two types of ultraviolet (UV) radiation that can damage skin and cause sunburns, premature signs of aging, and skin cancer. UVA rays, or ultraviolet A, have longer wave lengths and penetrate your skin more deeply than UVB. UVA rays are often associated with skin aging, although they can cause skin to burn.
UVB rays, or ultraviolet B, have shorter wavelengths and generally only reach the surface layers of your skin. UVB causes skin to burn, blister, tan, and peel. If your sunscreen doesn't say "broad spectrum," it only protects against UVB rays. Always opt for a broad spectrum sunscreen to protect yourself from both UVB and UVA rays.
We're officially in the era of digital aging. Blue light — the type of light that our phones and computers emit — has been shown to cause melasma and hyperpigmentation. But the good news is that there's a way to protect your mug while you scroll TikTok and play Wordle.
Applying sunscreen during your morning routine can help your skin battle the blue light. But not just any sunscreen will do — mineral sunscreens that contain zinc oxide and titanium dioxide form a physical barrier between your skin and the screen which can prevent light from penetrating your skin in a way that chemical sunscreens can't.
