While plastic packaging may be king when it comes to most conventional consumer manufacturers unconcerned with the environmental implications, glass holds an elegance — and eco-friendly advantage — that no other material can mimic. In addition to adding a touch of class to the kitchen or bathroom, glass soap containers are refillable and long-lasting. Glass spray bottles clearly show their contents for an easy way to see when it’s time to reup with your favorite cleaning concentrate, versus single-use plastic spray bottles that end up in landfills. And packaging those cleaning concentrates in reusable and recyclable glass keeps plastic from entering our environment.
When looking to make the switch to glass packaging, think beyond your household cleaners. Vitamins and supplements traditionally packaged in plastic containers often have glass-contained alternatives, which you can transform into holders for other household objects once their contents are gone.
Take a look at these products below to see what you can transition from plastic to glass packaging.

We don't want to use packaging that isn't recyclable or reusable, if we don't absolutely have to. Along with aluminum, glass is one of the most reusable and recyclable materials on the planet.
Now for the caveat: There are many types of glass that can't be recycled. Items such as Pyrex, wine glasses, glass plates, ceramics, lightbulbs, and car safety glass are all made of mixed materials that cannot be separated from each other. Some recycling facilities will accept leaded glass and crystal, but you'll need to check with your local recycling center for advice and instructions on how to recycle these items.
In theory, you could recycle broken glass. However, when you take a look at your local recycling center's webpage, you'll find that it most likely will not accept broken glass. In fact, most of centers will place the entire contents of a recycling bin into the "landfill" pile if the bin contains any broken glass at all. Broken glass creates a hazardous work environment for the sorters that goes against workplace health and safety standards. Gloves or not, recycling center workers won't touch it.
It’s best to dispose of broken glass in your trash dumpster. We know it's wasteful to do so, but wouldn't it be more wasteful for an entire bin of recyclable material to go to the landfill? Remember when recycling glass to place the contents carefully into the recycling bin to avoid breaks down the line.
Glass is an ideal packaging medium for myriad reasons. Clear glass provides a window into the product that you're buying, so you know when you’re running low. Glass is also impermeable to most chemicals and resists leaching like no other medium can, so you can rest assured that if you reuse your glass packaging, you aren't ingesting any chemicals that leaked into the liquid from within the container – a common concern with plastic containers. Most importantly, it offers a recyclable and reusable alternative to plastic packaging, which is seldom recycled and often ends up in our landfills and oceans.
