Since we reuse our food containers again and again, it’s no wonder that at times a funky odor may get left behind. We have a few tricks for getting rid of smells and odors though, don't worry. Here are two things to try.
1. Sunshine and vinegar: If you’re noticing a nasty, left-behind smell in your food storage containers, then try setting it open outside on a sunny day. This will give your containers a chance to air out, and (fun fact) the sun has a natural ability to fight odors. Afterward, bring your food storage containers inside and rinse them with white vinegar before washing them with hot water and soap. Lastly, fill ‘em up with white vinegar and let them sit soaking for about three minutes. Wash them again, and then they should be good to go.
2. Baking soda: If it’s wintertime or not a particularly sunny day, but you still need to get rid of odors trapped in your food storage containers, try baking soda instead of the method above. Just mix baking soda with warm water until a paste-like mixture is made. Rub this “paste” inside your containers and let it sit in there for at least 24 hours. When you’re ready, rinse your containers. You can repeat these steps again if the odors haven’t disappeared after your first try.
No matter whether you’re storing long-term food storage or short-term food storage, one thing’s for sure — you’re looking for the best way to organize your food storage containers so they’re easy to get to, easy to tell apart, and easy to use. Whether you’re using glass food storage containers, stainless steel, or recycled plastic ones, it’s always easiest if they’re stackable for use inside your fridge or cupboards or even on top of your countertops. If you’re looking for simple ways to store them when they’re not in use, here are some great ideas below:
Airtight food containers are one of the best ways to keep food fresh, while giving it a longer shelf life, too. Airtight food containers block out both air and moisture from spoiling food with a sealing system, usually made of silicone. They’re highly recommended to be used when you’ve opened food from packaging that doesn’t reseal because they slow down oxidation, which occurs when your food is exposed to air. They also prevent freezer burn for items you’re storing in your freezer for long periods of time.
Plus, did you know some food items like flour can last around a year when placed in an airtight container? That’s why it’s a great idea to invest in these types of containers even if you think they’re a little pricey because you’ll save on food waste and money because you won't have to replace food as often.
