FAQs

Can you use dish soap in a dishwasher?

If you’ve run out of dishwashing detergent and you’re thinking about substituting it with dish soap, think again. While a few drops of the best dish soap combined with baking soda may do the trick, filling your dispenser full with liquid dish soap will most likely create a sudsy mess in your dishwasher, not to mention on your kitchen floor.

In fact, dish soap may not only cause your dishwasher to overflow with bubbles — let’s save those for the bathtub! — but it can create a scummy residue on your dishes and equipment too.

You could even ruin your dishwasher’s plumbing. And nobody wants to call a plumber to fix clogged pipes, drainage, and filters. Worst case scenario: You might have to purchase an entirely new dishwasher.

Let’s say you do mistake your dish soap refills for dishwasher detergent. What do you do? Turn off the machine, let the dishwasher drain, use a wet mop or rag to soak up any suds, and remove your dishes, which you’ll unfortunately need to clean again. Then rinse and wipe the dishwasher until there’s no excess residue.

Is natural dish soap antibacterial?

Sorry to break it to you, but most dish soaps — no matter how squeaky clean your glasses, plates, and utensils appear — are not antibacterial. However, conventional dish soaps that are labeled antibacterial often contain ingredients that are bad for your body and the environment, such as hormone-disrupting triclosan.

Your best bet to stave off illness and food-borne pathogens? Go au naturel. Some of the best natural dish soaps contain antibacterial properties derived from essential oils like tea tree, rosemary, lavender, and eucalyptus, which happen to smell yummy too.

Use the dishwasher if you have one. Due to its higher temps (too hot for your own hands to handle), a dishwasher kills bacteria. Better yet, use the sanitizer setting to ensure your clean dishes are germ-free.

No dishwasher? Pull on a pair of slip-resistant cleaning gloves and use a scrubber brush with a handle to clean your dishes. If you prefer using a scrubber sponge or scouring pad, just be sure to switch it out for new one at least once a week, or clean it in the microwave, since bacteria and other nasty germs can build up on the surface.

What is the difference between dish soap and hand soap?

You might also be wondering if you can use liquid dish soap as hand soap, and vice versa. The best natural dish soaps are formulated with plant-based ingredients. That means they’re typically gentler on hands than many commercial counterparts.

So, dish soap that’s biodegradable, paraben-free, and phthalate-free is generally safe to use for hand-washing purposes. After all, unless you’re protecting your hands with gloves, you’re most likely exposing your skin to dish soap while handwashing any dishes. Still, dish soaps often contain degreasers that can be harsher on your hands.

Liquid hand soap, on the other "hand," is generally made with a milder solution. It also tends to dissolve in water faster than dish soap. Therefore, hand soaps may not be as effective for getting the job done on your dishes.

It’s healthiest to select kitchen cleaning products with plant-derived ingredients so they work effectively on dishes, hands, and whatever else you need to clean.
