FAQs

How often should you floss?

It is highly recommended by dentists and the American Dental Association to floss once a day. That may seem like a lot but it is the best way to get rid of plaque in your mouth (brushing doesn't really cut it when it comes to removing plaque).

What's plaque, you ask? Well, when you eat foods, especially those with sugars or carbohydrates, plaque is a sticky residue that is left behind from those foods on your teeth. If you leave plaque on your teeth for too long it turns into a harder substance called tartar. Tartar is what dentists scrape off your teeth when you have a cleaning. Tartar usually builds up along your gums and is a cause of gum disease in some people.

How do you use floss with braces?

Flossing is already hard enough when your teeth aren't compacted by metal braces. So, should you floss when you have braces, and how in the world do you do it?

Here are some basic tips to flossing with braces:

  • Grab a pretty long piece of floss, up to 20 inches, so you can continue to use fresh pieces of the floss as you move through your teeth.
  • Take one end of your floss and wiggle it behind your braces wire. This will be time consuming, but it's most effective in the end. You don't have to floss the wire, FYI.
  • Once behind the braces wire, wrap the floss around your fingers and get into that vertical crevice of your teeth.
  • Pull the floss out gently and thread it behind the wire for the next set of teeth.

Another option for people with braces is a water flosser that can get into the crevices of your teeth without having to thread it through the wire. Plus, they're eco-friendly and low waste. Win win.

What is dental floss made of?

Conventional dental floss is typically made of nylon, which is a plastic. On top of the nylon, floss and oral health companies use petrochemical waxes to give it that smooth feeling and artificial flavors to make it taste good.

Natural and eco-friendly flosses are made of natural fibers, like multifilament polyester fibers, instead. The coating is generally biodegradable instead of chemical, like beeswax or a digestible oil. This Smart Floss from Dr. Tung's is also flavored with natural cardamom essential oils instead of artificial flavoring.

When buying dental floss, it's important to think about the plastics and chemicals you're putting in your mouth when you buy a conventional brand. Reducing waste and chemical contact is top of mind here at Grove, which is why we feature natural and eco-friendly floss instead. Give it a try and browse the best dental flosses above.
