FAQs

Why should you consider switching from plastic cooking utensils?

Some studies have shown that plastic utensils can potentially cause issues with your thyroid via endocrine disruptors, but they also break down quickly. This means that not only can particles of the plastic material get into your food (and bloodstream, in the form of microplastics), but you may need to replace your plastic items more frequently. To learn more about how plastics can sneak into your body virtually undetected, read more about microplastics and how they may impact your health.

Wood utensils are also more antibacterial than man-made objects, so you'll have to worry less about both micro-organisms and microplastics, and they're less likely to scratch your nonstick surfaces like metal utensils might.

How well do eco-friendly cooking utensils hold up to normal usage?

Grove members have mentioned that our eco-friendly cooking tools are durable yet gentle on food (and the hands that wield them), so you can prep dinner without breaking a sweat — knowing you've invested in products that will go the distance. Just be sure to follow the basics of maintaining wooden utensils:

  • Clean wooden utensils with hot water and mild dish soap.
  • Never run wooden utensils through the dishwasher: The high temperatures can cause cracking.
  • Allow utensils to dry completely before putting away.
  • If you're worried about staining, avoid highly pigmented foods such as tomato sauce or berry reductions.
  • Periodically rub wooden utensils with mineral oil to prevent drying out and cracking.

Do cooking utensils made from bamboo require any special care?

Use them just the same as you would any other spoon or spatula! However, as mentioned above, we recommend hand-washing them whenever possible to maintain their efficacy and lifespan. The combined water pressure and harsher soaps in the dishwasher won't play nice with this more porous wood. You'll also want to avoid soaking them in water for any significant amount of time, as bamboo is more absorbent than other materials.

If they get dry or brittle, it's also recommended to bring them back to life with mineral oils whenever needed. Sure, it's slightly more work than other utensils, but the health benefits and eco-friendly nature of this choice will be so worth it – trust!
