FAQs

What is colloidal oatmeal?

Colloidal oatmeal is made from the Avena sativa plant. Oats from this plant are ground into a fine powder that can be used in all manner of skincare products. Colloidal oatmeal is packed full of fats, proteins, vitamins, and minerals that nourish the skin, plus it boasts antioxidant properties that help protect and soothe your body’s largest organ.

Folks with dry, irritated skin or conditions like eczema find relief with colloidal oatmeal because it’s also an emollient — it holds moisture in the skin for long-lasting hydration. Colloidal oatmeal is a powerful anti-inflammatory, too — it contains avenanthramides, which reduce cytokines, a protein in the body that causes inflammation.

What is the difference between colloidal oatmeal and regular oatmeal?

What’s the difference between the box of oats you buy at the grocery store and the colloidal oatmeal you slather on your body for dry skin relief? Well, not much. “Colloidal” sounds super fancy, but it actually just means a substance that has a gelatinous texture, which is essentially what sets colloidal oats apart from regular rolled oats.

Colloidal oatmeal is made from whole oats, including the bran — it’s just been ground into a very fine powder and mixed with a liquid base such as oil, body cream, or water that makes it easy to apply to the skin. You can make colloidal oatmeal at home, but you’ll need whole oats with the bran, since that’s where the bulk of the nutrients are. Grind your oats into a superfine powder, then add a liquid base to make it spreadable — or pour the powder into your tub for a soothing colloidal oatmeal bath.

Can you use colloidal oatmeal every day?

Colloidal oatmeal comes in an assortment of products, so frequency of use depends on what type of colloidal oatmeal skincare you’re using. In general, colloidal oatmeal is safe to use multiple times a day — especially if you’ve got dry skin or if you’ve just gotten out of the shower or bath.

Before incorporating a new product into your skincare routine, test it out on a small patch of skin. Colloidal oatmeal’s side effects are rare, but some folks might experience redness or irritation. If you’ve got a skin condition like eczema or psoriasis, check with your doctor before you slather anything new on your body.
