Vinegar, otherwise known as acetic acid, has been used for millenia for a multitude of purposes, the foremost of which is cooking and pickling. However, food preparation isn't vinegar's only claim to fame. Many swear by the health benefits that apple cider vinegar provides, from relieving skin irritation to assisting in digestion. It has even shown to reduce the effects of cardiovascular disease. But it doesn't end there! Vinegar has also been widely used as a cleaning agent for centuries.

Back in the day, people made vinegar out of whatever they could ferment — grapes, apples, even figs. In recent years, an arguably purer form of vinegar — white vinegar — has come onto the scene. It’s the most popular vinegar because it can be economically mass produced and has no color – which prevents potential staining. Whatever the biological base for the vinegar, most vinegars have about a 5% acidity. Most microbes can't stand up to such concentrations of acid, and vinegar provides the perfect amount of safety to the user while also being deadly to bacteria and fungi.
Cleaning vinegar takes it to the next level. Cleaning vinegar contains about 20% more acidity than white vinegar typically does. The added acidity produces a quicker killing effect against harmful microbes, while also working harder to prevent new germs from taking hold on surfaces wiped with cleaning vinegar.
Cleaning vinegar is basically the same thing as white vinegar. However, white vinegar is more diluted – so it doesn't produce the same acidic punch that cleaning vinegar offers. We wouldn't toss either of them aside for cleaning purposes — but, as stated earlier, white vinegar typically contains just 5% acidity. Cleaning vinegar contains upwards of 20%.
White vinegar and cleaning vinegar are both safe for the environment and nontoxic. Both serve as effective cleaning agents and are relatively inexpensive compared to other, harsher, chemical cleaners. Chemical cleaning agents are harsh on the environment, harsh on skin, and very toxic if you accidentally ingest them. Although any vinegar is safer than any chemical cleaner, we’d suggest using cleaning vinegar for cleaning, and save the apple cider vinegar for skin irritation and cucumber salads. Keep the white vinegar on hand for pickling.
With all this hype for using vinegar to clean, it may seem counterproductive to give warnings about what you should not clean with vinegar. But keep in mind, vinegar is an acid. There are many materials out there that are highly susceptible to damage from acids. Using an acidic product on certain surfaces can etch the material or kill the sheen.
We want you to have a clean house – not a house full of items ruined by improper cleaning. We recommend not using vinegar of any sort to clean the materials listed below:
