First things first: There are some household cleaning products that simply shouldn’t mix. For example, vinegar plus bleach produces chlorine gas, while ammonia plus bleach creates a toxic gas. Knowing the dangers of blending certain cleaning products together can prevent toxic fumes and other chemical hazards in your home.
Most cleaning products shouldn't be used with another product, they are already enhanced for best results by themselves. If you aren’t sure if two cleaning products can be used together, contact the manufacturer. To be on the safer side, use each product in your cleaning supplies bundle separately. That rule of thumb also applies to sending anything down the drain or to the trash.
For best results, keep these and other natural cleaning products in their own containers and use them separately on each surface that you wipe, spray, or scrub:
Marble is actually soft and porous, so it’s easily damaged. Harsh cleansers, scouring powders, and abrasive materials can scratch or stain marble surfaces. If you want to preserve your marble countertops, floors, or shower walls, you want to be sure they’re properly treated with nontoxic home cleaning products that are gentle yet effective.
Acidic cleaners — citrus, vinegar, lemon — as well as ammonia, bleach, and hydrogen peroxide are no-no’s for marble. Instead, use a soft rag mop or clean cotton cloth to apply a neutral stone cleaner such as Seventh Generation Granite and Stone Cleaner, which contains a blend of plant-derived oils that are also food-safe.
It may surprise you to learn that you can also prepare your own formula with all the marble-cleaning power of a commercial product. Simply mix 1/4 cup isopropyl alcohol with a drop of natural liquid dishwashing detergent in a 32-ounce spray bottle of water.
You’re probably accustomed to checking the expiration dates on food. But cleaning products? Believe it or not, your cleaning supplies also expire. Who knew, right?
If you think about it, some of these ingredients — especially the naturally derived and organic ingredients found in cleaning supplies here at Grove — can degrade or even spoil over time, especially if they’re preservative-free. So, if you’ve got a house cleaning bundle tucked away under the kitchen sink, you may want to check the manufacturer’s stamp (usually printed on the box or bottle) just to be sure.
To keep your natural home cleaning products lasting longer (typically up to two years), store them in a cool place away from direct sunlight. To preserve their shelf life, only open your house cleaning supplies when you’re ready to use them. And be sure to check with your local waste disposal facility before getting rid of anything that isn’t biodegradable.
At Grove, we take the guesswork out of which products are good for you and your home. Every product meets strict standards for being nontoxic, effective, sustainable, and cruelty-free. Once you find products you love, we ship to your home on a flexible, monthly schedule.
