FAQs

How often should a cat be groomed?

Think your cat might need a bath? Cats are actually really good at keeping themselves clean and shouldn't be bathed unless they have fleas or they're super dirty. Washing your cat too often could dry out their fur or cause them undue stress. That being said, waterless shampoos are an excellent option for cats who are just a tad funky, but not gross enough to require a water bath.

One thing you can do regularly is brush your cat. Brushing your fur baby a few times a week helps prevent hairballs from appearing later on, and it gives you the chance to notice any bumps, bald patches, or cuts that could require veterinary attention. And for folks with cats who will allow it, monthly nail clipping with clippers made specifically for cats is a great way to stop your cat's claws from catching on the curtains or your favorite sweater.

How can I calm my cat for grooming?

Most cats are fine with grooming tasks like brushing. If your cat gets a little testy while you're clipping her nails, try wrapping her burrito-style in a towel with one paw sticking out — she'll look very cute and very angry, but it'll keep her from mercilessly clawing your eyes out. This might work best as a two-person job, with one person holding the vexed vixen and another on clipper duty. If she's still fighting you tooth and nail, it's time to take her to a professional cat groomer instead.

Let's talk about water baths. If you absolutely must give your cat a water bath, check out our guide to bathing your cat for tips and tricks on how to prepare the tub and, most importantly, how to keep your cat from flipping out. For cats who are just a little dirty, waterless shampoo that's formulated specifically for cats will do the trick.

What can you use to clean a cat’s fur?

When it's time to bathe your cat, always reach for a shampoo that's designed for cats. Human shampoo and even dog shampoo could dry out the natural oils in your cat's fur, leaving them itchy and uncomfortable. Liquid cat shampoo or waterless cat shampoo are both great picks!

If you give your cat a water bath, use a cup or removable showerhead to get their fur wet, taking care to avoid their face. Use a soft, damp washcloth (no soap!) to gently wipe off your kitty's face. When the time comes for your cat's weekly brushing sesh, any cat brush will do. And if you're clipping their nails, make sure you have cat nail clippers — they've got a special structure that's designed for clipping a cat's sensitive claws.
