FAQs

What is calendula?

The calendula is a flowering plant native to Europe, the Mediterranean region, and the near east. It's closely related to the daisy, and is commonly referred to as the marigold. There are numerous species of calendula, but the flower most used in cosmetics and skin treatment is the Calendula officinalis, or pot marigold.

What is calendula good for?

The calendula flower isn't just good for brightening up a flower pot. The calendula officinalis is rising in popularity for holistic healing and naturopathic skin therapy. It has also become the prime ingredient in many skincare products for its ability to reduce eczema and acne — not to mention its antiseptic properties.

Calendula oil is rich in antioxidants — fighting off the free radicals that lend age to the surface of the skin — while also having strong anti-inflammatory properties. It also contains fatty acids that help the skin retain moisture, making it an ideal ingredient for facial creams and moisturizers.

Is calendula toxic to humans?

Both the calendula flower and calendula oil are non-toxic and safe for consumption, as well as topical application. It's been ingested safely for centuries as a medicine to ease many ailments. The flower can be used as a coloring agent for food, much the way saffron is — so no need to worry if it's an ingredient in your natural supplement.

If you're pregnant, however, seek the advice of a physician before ingesting calendula or any of its derivatives, as they may pose some risks. If you have an allergy to chrysanthemums, daisies, ragweed, or marigolds, you'll likely have an allergic reaction to calendula as well. Calendula also may have sedative properties, so it's not recommended that you take any supplements containing calendula if you're also taking a sedative.
