WRITTEN BY Grove Collaborative • 22 min read

Scrubbing away soap scum, toilet bowl stains, mold, and mildew in the bathroom is a chore nobody looks forward to. Grove understands that cleaning a bathroom is a dirty job, especially when you’ve got a buildup of grime in your toilet, on bath tile, or on grout.

Simply knowing which toilet bowl cleaner or shower glass cleaner to use makes the job a whole lot easier. If you want to find effective bathroom cleaning supplies that also protect your family and pets, we recommend staying away from synthetic bathroom cleaners with toxic chemicals or other potentially harmful ingredients. Instead, look for nontoxic products that are biodegradable, hypoallergenic, triclosan-free, and paraben-free.

Stay on top of nasty odors and stains that can make deep cleaning your bathroom a literal pain in the neck. To help, we compiled a collection of the best natural bathroom cleaners rated by Grove members ... so you don’t have to do more work.

FAQs

Can you use toilet bowl cleaner in the shower?

Toilet bowl cleaner is made to clean porcelain toilet bowls, so it’s not generally recommended as a bathroom cleaner for the shower or tub. The stain-removing power of hydrochloric acid found in most conventional toilet cleaners can be corrosive to your chrome fixtures, including drains, while active ingredients containing chemicals like bleach may be harmful if inhaled in the shower.

Instead, consider using shower (and toilet) cleaning products with naturally derived ingredients rather than something that leaves behind a chemical residue. Still, it’s best to let your bathroom cleaning supplies do the job each was designed for.

Thankfully, Grove Collaborative carries all-purpose solutions for your bathroom, including shower glass cleaner and shower spray that work on glass shower doors as well as other nonporous surfaces such as shower curtains, walls, and floors — even those made of sealed marble.

What is the best cleaner for mold in the shower?

It’s common to find both mold and mildew growing in your bathroom, since moisture can linger, especially after a shower. But mold growth can be dangerous, irritating your respiratory system and aggravating any allergies. To prevent mold from invading your bathroom, always turn on a ventilation fan and, if possible, crack open a window while you shower.

The natural acidity of distilled white vinegar is known to effectively kill a large percentage of mold spores and slow their growth. You can also mix a half-and-half solution of hydrogen peroxide and water into a spray bottle. Baking soda is another alternative that also absorbs moisture. Just be sure to keep each of these bathroom cleaners separate, as mixing them can be toxic — even explosive.

While ridding your shower of mold or mildew stains that are caught in the grout, be sure to ventilate the bathroom. You’ll need a spray bottle; non-abrasive sponge, scrubber brush, or scouring pad; and probably an old toothbrush for those tough-to-reach crevices in the shower.

How often should you deep clean your bathroom?

Prevention is key. If you break out those bathroom cleaning supplies on a weekly, rather than monthly (or yearly!) basis, it’ll become much easier — and quicker — to wipe down mirrors, counters, sinks, and showers.

To clean stone surfaces, such as granite or marble, you’ll need a specific bathroom cleaner to do the job, such as Seventh Generation Granite and Stone Cleaner. Follow these steps for the best way to clean tile, porcelain, chrome, and stainless steel:

Cleaning shower walls:

Cleaning the bathtub:

  • Spray the above concentrate onto the tub’s surface, followed by a sprinkle of Bon Ami Powder Cleanser
  • Let the mixture sit for 3–5 minutes, then wipe it clean with a damp sponge
  • Rinse the tub and dry it thoroughly, using a streak-free cleaning cloth
